Cerdas Cermat – Primary Division

In the midst o f this pandemic, Saint Nicholas School is still trying to provide positive activities and opportunities for pupils, especially at the Primary School (SD) level to compete in a healthy manner through an online Quiz competition. This activity aims to measure the potential of each pupil in the lessons of Indonesian, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and PPKn. In this competition, pupils are expected to show a commitment to be the best pupils who can inspire other pupils. This Online Quiz is the first time it has been carried out and the entire PIC of the competition are very grateful because this competition runs well.

In this competition, we are using Kahoot as the application. This is our first trial to use that application for the competition. Therefore, the PIC held a technical meeting on February 16, 2021 for the first session at 12.00 WIB -13.00 WIB for grade 1-3 and the second session at 13.00 WIB-14.00 WIB for grade 4-6, so that all competition participants could understand how to use the Kahoot application. In this competition, each competitor must provide 1 laptop to join zoom and 1 cellphone to answer questions.

Online quiz has been carried out on February 17 to February 19, 2021 for the first session at 12.00 WIB -13.00 WIB and the second session at 13.00 WIB-14.00 WIB. The number of participants representing each class from levels 1-3 is 5 pupils, while there are 10 participants in each class as the representative for grade 4-6. So, the total number of participants in the competition were 127 pupils. However, because this competition was individual, there were only 3 winners for each level.

The winner in this competition is determined based on the fastest time and the highest score. So each participant must read the questions carefully and answer all the questions quickly and correctly. The prizes for 1st winner are trophies, gold medals and certificates. For the 2nd  winner gets a trophy, silver medal and certificate. Meanwhile for the 3rd place gets a trophy, bronze medal and certificate. We still award certificates for all the participants who do not get any places.

Finally, all PICs would like to thank the parents who worked together to support the implementation of this online quiz competition and for our pupils who have not been able to become winner in this online quiz, stay enthusiastic and stay diligent in learning, hopefully in the annual quiz the next can be the best.

Second Term Virtual PTM – Primary Division

Our school understands the importance of every parent to nurture their child’s dream and all-around development. Thanks to technology, PTMs can now be conducted online with the help of video conferencing tools anywhere on any devices especially during this pandemic. Our school Second Semester PTM was held online through Webinar Zoom on Wednesday, 20th January 2021.

The purpose of organizing PTMs is not only for creating better interactions and communication between parents and teachers, but also to develop a closer and solid bond with them. We are very pleased to see many parents participated in our second PTM.

During our PTM, we invited a guest speaker, Ibu Charlotte K. Priatna, who is an educational practitioner and the founder of Athalia School in Serpong, Tangerang. She has great experiences in education field for more than 30 years. Our speaker shared an interesting topic about parenting/disciplining during online classes. After the seminar, the parents were given chances to ask during the Q&A session. Many of them were keen and eager in asking questions regarding the topic and the speaker gave excellent explanation and answers to their questions.

Apart from the seminar, we also discussed and explained about the school activities and programs at school such as; calendar academic, report cards and online learning activities. Ms. Tanti discussed briefly about the upcoming events and programs in our school academic calendar, followed by Pak Yohanes who explained about the report card. Last but not least, the online learning activities was informed by Ms. Lea. Another Q&A session was held before ending the PTM. Some parents participated and expressed their concerns.

Overall, the virtual PTM was a success and we hoped that the parents are pleased and satisfied. We had put in our best effort to conduct this virtual PTM. We hope everyone is in good condition and stay safe!

Valentine’s Day Celebration – Primary Division

Valentine’s Day Celebration

By : Maria Theresia

“Hari Kasih Sayang” or commonly known as Valentine’s Day is celebrated every February 14 each year. This moment has become a culture in Indonesia and has been enlivened by the community even though it is not a mandatory celebration for everyone. There are many versions that tell about the origin of the Valentine celebration.

One version says Valentine comes from the name of a priest, namely St. Valentine. At that time Rome was under the rule of Emperor Claudius II. During his leadership, there was a big war and all men were required to join the military service. The majority of the people oppose this policy. The most logical reason society at that time was that they were already married and didn’t want anything bad to happen to them in the future as a result of joining the war. There are also those who originate because in the near future, they will soon be engaged or married. Hearing this, Emperor Claudius II became furious, and finally he issued a rule that the entire Roman empire was prohibited from having engagement / marriage. This emperor’s policies caused a great deal of chaos. Many families lost their husbands or sons because of the arbitrariness of Emperor Claudius II at that time. A priest from a small monastery in the area of Rome, secretly gives marriage blessings to couples who intend to get married and keeps their certificates hidden.

This continued until finally this secret was exposed and the priest was arrested, then thrown into prison. Because of the kindness and help given by the pastor, the people at that time demanded his release. However, Emperor Claudius II did not budge and finally sentenced him to death on February 14. Deep grief envelops every citizen who feels the goodness of St. Valentine. Since then, the people have declared that every February 14th is St. Valentine’s Day.

Valentine’s Day culture began to enter Indonesia estimated at the end of the 19th century. Usually, these statements are expressed by giving roses, gifts of chocolates, dolls and other cute trinkets.

But on this occasion, St. Nicholas Primary School held a Valentine event together at school. This has not diminished our enthusiasm during the pandemic to hold Valentine’s Day even though only by zooming online. This year’s Valentine looks different compared to last year. This year we only make a few crafts which will be made simultaneously by children from grades 1-6.

In the morning, pupils are wearing different clothes (pink girl, and white boy) they are ready to start their Valentine’s Day together. The pupils looked enthusiastic. They have prepared all the materials for making crafts. Before they make the craft, the teacher will show a video about the history of Valentine’s Day. The children watched carefully, they paid close attention to the historical video of the occurrence of Valentine’s Day. Maybe some questions arise from the pupil’s minds and while watching the video, but the teachers explain with great patience. After the pupils watched the historical video of the occurrence of Valentine’s Day, they arrived to make a craft. On this occasion, pupils in grades 1-3 they will make “Paper Heart Craft” while for grade 4-6 they will make “Valentine Day Cards”

The event went on smoothly. After making the craft, the event was closed by praying together.

Valentine’s Day is not only celebrated on February 14th, in fact every day is also a day of love. We can spread our affection especially for God, our parents, brothers and sisters in the faith.

Therefore, happy to celebrate Valentine’s Day every day. God bless.
